How is a pet good for mental health?

How does having animals in the house affect health? What kind of pets can you get for a small child?
Tip for best answer: M$1.00

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

There have been studies done on the affects pets have on humans. Pet ownership can lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels. This can help with heart attack and stroke prevention. Aside from these benefits, pets can also aid those suffering with anxiety, mood, and other mental health issues.

Pets help their owners by providing companionship without judgment, which could be great for agoraphobics. The silly antics of pets tend to put their owners in a better mood by bringing laughter and smiles. For pet owners suffering with emotional instability the routine of pet care can be a comfort. These and many other benefits are why animals are used as therapy “tools” in hospitals and retirement homes.

Some of the best pets for small children are: most cage/tank animals like guinea pigs, gerbils, mice, hamsters, fish, or birds. For children that are older, these plus small dogs and cats make great pets.

A fish tank is a simple pet for a small child and watching them swim in the tank lowers blood pressure. IF you are getting a larger animal such as a cat or dog be aware first off that it is too much responsbility for a child - one of the adults in the household will invariably be taking care of this animal, and second off that the animal will end up bonding to the main food feeder.

So if your goal is to create that kind "boy and his dog" vibe, wait until the child is 12 at the very earliest, expresses an interest themselves, and teach the child exactly how much work would be involved
