How important is middle school math?

Tip for best answer: M$0.25
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Middle school math is important for several reasons.

It is a bridge between basic elementary school math concepts and the more advanced topics taught in high school.

The class period structure of middle school allows students who are ready to start to take more advanced math classes than their peers. This means:

It prepares students who are not gifted in math to take high school algebra. Seventh and eighth grade math start to prepare students who might not want to major in math in college to be ready to pass a basic college math course.

It allows students who are gifted in math to be tracked into Pre-Algebra in seventh grade and Algebra in eighth grade so they can take more advanced math classes in high school.

I think middle school math is very important because it provides the essential building blocks for higher level mathematics. The foundations of algebra are learned in middle school. Students must know how to deal with fractions, greatest common factors, least common multiples, multiplication, percentages, addition, subtraction and division before learning more complexities of algebra, geometry, trigonometry and calculus.

I tutor math at all levels and see students struggle badly with the basics and it hurts them throughout their entire academic years learning higher level math. Unlike many other subjects that aren't cumulative, math is very much a cumulative class.

Knowing the properties of mathematics such as commutative, associative and distributive, as well as the concept of ratios are important to learn to be able to do well in algebra.
