How important is it to register a purebred cat you only intend to keep as a pet?
When I bought my balinese kittens from a breeder, she gave me the forms to register them with the CFA. Registration wasn't expensive, but I chose not to bother with it...seemed unnecessary given that I didn't intend to show or breed them.
Should I have registered them? What are the advantages of registering a purebred animal, even if you don't plan to show or breed them? Or is it something I should have done out of respect for the breeder's reputability in her organization?
I don't really understand what purposes the cat associations serve, beyond policing breeders and setting regulations for shows...

Truly the main point of registering your purebred cat is for allowance into contests and shows. But a reason that everyone should register their cat is to make sure you never lose him. If a cat ever enters the pound with tags on, the tags are researched and the registration forms are found, if the registration correlates with you the pound will call you. In some places it is illegal for you NOT to register your cat, but these places are outside the U.S.
