How important is it to read what a putt will do around the hole verses general alignment?

I think general alignment is obviously very important because if the ball doesn't get anywhere near the hole, what type of break there is around the hole has no significance. BUT if you get the ball near the hole, with the correct speed to drop in the hole it will be slowing down. As it gets slower any break will be more pronounced so it's important to see if there's any change in break the closer the ball gets to the cup.
