How important does a person have to be before they are considered assassinated instead of just murdered?

The official definition of assassination is: : to murder (a usually prominent person) by sudden or secret attack often for political reasons.
Usually as assassination is the murder of a public figure or murder for some type of cause. I would also consider murder-for-hire an assassination.

I think if a person is sufficiently politically notable that their death (whether natural, accidental or through foul play) would automatically be covered on international news, then their death by deliberate human action would be called assasination instead of murder. The exception would be if a prominent political figure were murdered for an undeniably personal reason that had nothing to do with their governmental power (such as a crime of passion by a former lover).
