How to stop and prevent dark lips due to smoking?
I have a friend in high school who told me that she started smoking when she was in college. She was curious at first and some of her friends smoke so she tried it. She has been a smoker since then. She said she consumes half pack a day. I told her to quit but she said she will try. She is concerned about her lips because it begin to darken especially if she can't put on some lipstick. Is there a way to treat dark lips?

The first and most obvious answer here is to either quit smoking or reduce the amount of cigarettes that she does smoke in one day. However, due to the fact that nicotine is a highly addictive substance, that is often much more difficult than it seems, and that is another topic in and of itself.
As far as the dark lips go, there are a number of things that your friend can do at home. One of the most obvious reasons for darkened teeth, gums, and lips in smokers is nicotine. However, there are a number of other things that smoking does to the body that can impact this as well. First, cigarettes reduce the amount of saliva that is produced. It is very important that people who smoke drink at least ten glasses of water a day in order to prevent dehydration and other physiological problems. This also helps to keep the skin moisturized.
Smoking also leads to decreased levels of vitamin C. Anyone who smokes cigarettes should either take a supplement that contains vitamin C or increase their consumption of citrus fruits or fruit juices. Pouring a little bit of lemon juice on the lips at night before bed can also help to keep the lips moistened. Lip balms and lip moisturizers can help, but these can also be dangerous if ingested. A shea butter lip balm that contains no petroleum byproducts is the best solution, and should be used more heavily at night so that it is allowed to penetrate the lips. Smokers and those who use smokeless tobacco can also apply clarified butter directly to the lips to help retain moisture.
