How good is Dwight Howard?

Dwight Howard has already made the NBA Finals once and he’s one of the only players to lead the league in both blocks and rebounds. Very few players in NBA history have been able to post the kinds of numbers that Dwight Howard has. So, just how good is Dwight Howard? Is he a top five player in the NBA? Is he right there with LeBron James and Kobe Bryant?

At 24 years old, Dwight Howard is already the best center in the NBA. He averaged 18.3 points per game, 13.2 rebounds per game, 2.8 blocked shots per game and shot 61%. For his career he has very similar numbers. The only downside to his game is his poor free throw shooting at 59.2% this year and 59.9% for his career. But even Hall of Famer Wilt Chamberlain was a poor free throw shooter. Without Howard the Orlando Magic do not come close to making the NBA Finals. When placing him among the best players in the league, I'd say he has to be. It's difficult sometimes to rank players of different positions. Statistics don't always tell the story either. Players like James and Bryant score more than Howard, but they also take more shots. Howard scored his points on only 10 field goal attempts per game, whereas Bryant, who scored 27 points per game on 21.5 field goal attempts and James scored 29.7 points per game on 20.1 field goal attempts. Also comparing rebouding statistics isn't fair either just on pure numbers since they play different positions. You'd have to compare them relative to their respective positions. Same with assists, blocks, steals, etc. As for total impact on a game, Howard certainly ranks right up with a select elite group of today's NBA players.

Dwight Howard of the Orlando Magic is really great he helped his team made it to the NBA Finals in 2009 and no matter what will be the results of their series with the Boston Celtics on their semifinal showdown in the eastern conference playoffs, he will always be one of the finest player nowadays. He has a double double career average, which is a rarity and very difficult to achieve. In the 2010 playoffs he averaged 15.7 points and 10.60 rebounds. His average block of 3.6 is also astonishing. Indeed Howard is a class of his own he may not yet stand on the same league with Kobe Bryant of the Los Angeles Lakers and Lebron James of the Cleveland Cavaliers he is certainly much better than these two superstars on the defensive ends. He is consistently a member of the all-defensive teams in the league.
Howard’s defensive contribution to his team is ample enough and the other stats he gives to his team is a great bonus already.
