How far in advance do I need to mail a package if I want it to get from California to Massachusetts before Christmas?

I don't want to spend a lot on shipping.
Tip for best answer: M$0.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Parcel post's deadline is Dec. 16 -- it's the least expensive method of shipping via the post office.

If you're just shipping through the USPS, you won't have to spend that much and your package will take at most 9 days. Media mail and parcel post of packages that are less than 70 lbs take 2-9 days. If you're shipping something that's unusually light (less than 13.5 oz) then they say it will only take 1-3 days.

So, the answer is 9 days at most, but since the Christmas season can get very busy, I'd make sure the package is ready closer to two weeks ahead of time, just to be safe.

It depends on class of service and what carrier you are using. You could always mail something Next Day through the USPS or Fedex on the 23rd, and in most cases it would arrive there by Christmas Eve. In my experience, Fedex is more reliable on this account.

If you want to mail something via regular mail, the USPS recommends that you send it sooner rather than later, and usually estimate 4-7 days. The USPS's Priority Mail flat rate box at $8.95 regardless of weight is a great value, and this is usually estimated to arrive in 2 days.

Basically, whatever the USPS estimates for normal shipping time on their site, add a couple days. I wouldn't mail anything later than the 18th if you want to be sure it will arrive. If bad weather hits, packages will be delayed.
