How far do I need to go in my math education depending on my career choice?

Tip for best answer: M$0.25
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

If you choose to pursue business marketing, you'll need calculus and stats. If you are interested in the sciences and medicine in particular check out the math questions on the MCAT exam. This is not an exhaustive answer but looking at entrance exams give you an idea of what math is required for graduate study to prepare for career. As far as how far you need to go in your math education depending on your career choice, it really does depend on what you choose for a career. For example, if you're going to be a math teacher, a scientist, or anyone who deals with numbers a lot, you will need to take math in college as part of preparation for your career. However, for some other career choices this is not necessary at all.

For example, if you decide to go into law or teach English, you will likely not need any mathematics beyond high school, except for maybe one course in college. This is true for most careers - high school level math is usually more than enough for the majority of jobs in the real world. The only way you would be required to take more math than that would be if you choose a job that has a lot to do with mathematics. If you do that, you will have to take math in college and possibly graduate school as well.
