Los Angeles and San Diego are about 125 miles apart depending on exactly where in the two cities you are trying to get to. If traffic is flowing well it usually takes slightly over 2 hours to travel between the locations. You can also take a train from Los Angeles or San Diego to get to the other city. There are two freeways linking the towns, I-15 lengthens the drive by about 20 miles.
With both cities being on the ocean, they tend to attract similar tourists and it is easy to make a vacation incorporate both locales in one trip. There are airports in both places and you can fly into either place and then drive between them. There are also flights between the two cities as well.
