How exactly did Jacob Black become a werewolf in Twilight?

I have always been curious as to how exactly Jacob became a werewolf in Twilight. It never quite says, at least not that I can remember, I may need to do some rereading. It’s obvious how the Vampires come about, but how exactly do the werewolves, become werewolves? Are they bitten by an elder? Is it merely in their genes when they are born? Do all males of the tribe become werewolves, because of the tribe they are in? Do the females get affected by this, or is it only the males? And lastly, do the males become werewolves at a certain age? Or whenever the pack leader decides it’s time for them to become one?

They aren't werewolfs they are shapeshiffters. It is a magic of their tribe that they inherited (fiction) from their forefathers.

Great question tealmyster! I am sure that people who have not read the Twilight books recently or at all have the same question because the movies have not yet provided an indepth answer.

Jacob Black inherited the werewolf gene from his forefathers. Not all of the Quileute males will have the gene. All of thewerewolves are direct descendents of Kaheleha, the first great chief to become a werewolf. avaxier has already provided you with a great quote from Twilight Saga Eclipse that describes how the first werewolves came to exist.

All of Kaheleha’s descendents have this gene, even the females. Quileute legend describes the sons of Kaheleha becoming werewolves but as you find out in Eclipse the daughters can have the gene also.

There is not a set age at which the descendent males will become werewolves. They usually change around the age of sixteen but when they are needed they can change much earlier. The pack leader does not choose when they are ready. It is all based on the need for protection. In Eclipse, there is a need for a larger pack because of a pending vampire attack so a number of younger werewolves are changed around the age of fourteen.

I hope this has refreshed your memory!

It's actually mentioned in the third book of Twilight Series, Eclipse. Here's a quote of the story from the original novel :

"The Quileutes have always had magic in their blood. However, we have not always possessed the ability to shape-shift into wolves. In the beginning, we were spirit warriors. Kaheleha was the first great spirit Chief that we know of. When the tribe's land became threatened by a much larger tribe, Kaheleha lead the Quileutes to victory with their magic.

Our last great Spirit Chief, Taha Aki, was known to be a man of peace. However, there was one spirit warrior name Utlapa who did not agree with Taha Aki's ways. He wanted to enslave the neighboring tribes and gain power over more of the land. When Taha Aki became aware of Utlapa's wishes, he banished him from the tribe and prohibited him from ever using his spirit self again. Utlapa was furious, and took advantage of his first opportunity for revenge. The moment Taha Aki left his body in his spirit form, Utlapa stole Taha Aki's body and then killed his own body so that there was no body left to return to. Taha Aki was stuck in the spirit world, with no way to warn his tribe.

Taha Aki eventually came up with a solution that would change the lives of the Quileutes for generations to come. He entered the body of a large wolf, and the wolf shared his body with Taha Aki's spirit willingly. As both man and wolf, he went back to his tribe. At first they tried to kill him, but then they realized that the wolf was not an ordinary wolf. One of the warriors disobeyed his orders and entered into the spirit world, thus learning the truth. When Utlapa realized what happened, he killed the warrior before he could tell the others what he had discovered. Taha Aki was so enraged, so full of human anger, that his emotions were too powerful for the wolf's body, too human, and so he transformed into a man. Thus, the werewolves were created."

In Eclipse (or Breaking Dawn, I kinda forget), it's mentioned that the descendant of Taha Aki will only become werewolf if there are vampires near their settlements. Since Cullen covens live near the La Push, the descendants are able to become werewolf when they reach the right age. Normally it's 16 but if there are a lot of vampires nearby, it might come much earlier.

When there's a gathering of vampires in Breaking Dawn, even a 12 years old Quilettes become werewolf even it's too early. And Leah also become Werewolf in Breaking Dawn so the werewolf are applied to females too.

In Breaking Dawn, it's also mentioned that the Quileute werewolves are not actually real werewolves but instead just shape-shifter. And because their first chief choose to enter a wolf's body, their descendant become werewolves instead of any other creatures. The 'real' werewolves are mentioned to be more savage than the Quileute shape-shifter and are called 'Children of The Moon' because their power will be maximum if it's currently full moon. These 'real' werewolves can make another werewolves by biting them, just like vampire. But because of the big hunts that's started by Volturri, they are almost extinct in most parts of the world.

That's pretty much all. I'd suggest you read Eclipse and Breaking Dawn to read their complete story. Hope this helps! :)
