As am employee of Zeo, I'll refrain from answering the "which is better" question since I'm a little biased. But here is info from a thread on our forums where our CTO explains the differences between the two... (original thread here: http://bit.ly/gX0L1T )
Q: What are the major differences between the underlying technologies?
A: Zeo measures brainwaves with a headband – Wakemate measures movement with a wristband. This is the fundamental difference between the two products.
- Zeo can measure sleep phases (Wake, REM, Light, Deep), Wakemate can measure Sleep and Wake only. Deep and REM are vitally important restorative sleep elements for body and mind restoration – see more here: http://www.myzeo.com/pages/66_the_power_of_deep_and_rem.cfm
- If you boil it down to just sleep/wake, Zeo is more accurate than Wakemate on this parameter. See the scientific results here (http://www.myzeo.com/pages/52_for_health_professionals.cfm) – we tested Zeo and an actigraph (Actiwake by Respironics) against the gold standard PSG. Actiwake should be similar in accuracy to Wakemate given they use the same basic technology of actigraphy. Zeo was significantly more accurate at sleep/wake detection.
- One you wear on your head (Zeo). The other you wear on your wrist (Wakemate).
- Both products have a 'smart wakeup' feature – Zeo uses all sleep phases (Wake, REM, Light, Deep) to determine wakeup time (see more on Smartwake here: http://blog.myzeo.com/smartwake-a-different-way-to-wake-up/), Wakemate uses Sleep and Wake.
Outside of the fundamental technology difference there are many other differences between the two products:
- Zeo connects to a bedside display that works as your alarm clock. Wakemate connects to your smart phone which works as your alarm clock.
- Zeo costs $199 for the base version, Wakemate $59.99.
- Zeo has an online analytics suite at mysleep.myzeo.com and a coaching program The Seven Steps to Sleep Fitness – Wakemate has an online analytics platform Wakelytics
All of this is to my best knowledge at the time- we haven't had the chance to play with Wakemate yet since they haven't shipped much product yet.
Q: Do you think Zeo is a more accurate way of tracking sleep?
A: Yes. Wakemate and Zeo are different products and have various features and benefits. There are plenty of reasons to purchase one or the other depending on who you are and what your needs are. If you are looking for the most accurate way of tracking sleep in the home – Zeo is that.
Please let me know if you have additional questions!
