First and foremost, I don’t really see the iPad as a real portable gaming device like the PSP. But the sheer volume of games that has been coming out of the Apple App Store can make anyone think twice.
From a price point comparison, the PSP is a lot cheaper compared to the iPad. Using Newegg as a quick reference, a PSP 3000 would run you for about $169.99 and a PSP GO goes for $199.99, while the Apple iPad goes way up to between $779.99 and $879.99. Of course, one of the main reasons for the big price difference can be found in the features and technology offered by both.
The PSP focuses primarily on gaming, sprinkled in with a bit of multimedia capabilities. There’s no denying that the PSP has a much better library of games compared to the iPad since that was what it was built for. PSP games also cost more than iPad games. This can be attributed to the fact that publishers are willing to spend more for budget on a game designed for real, portable consoles. The iPad on the other hand also does gaming, but offers a whole lot more than that. Just take a look at the Apple App Store and you would find just about any application possible you can think of.
When you do play games on the iPad (especially games from really big, hotshot developers), you will really see where the better hardware comes in. The iPad employs a much higher resolution screen than the PSP, and the graphics in some of the bigger games just released can be almost compared to games available on the PS3 and Xbox 360 consoles (yes, surpassing even the Wii).I doubt a lot of developers though would take the time to give the iPad such a workout as battery life also plays a huge part with these type of devices.
In the end, if you really like gaming on the go, get a real portable console like the PSP (or even the DS). I’m sure you will have a better experience with them than on something like the iPad. Get an iPad or iPhone if you want a device that can do a whole lot more than just gaming.
