How does the Mentor-Protégé Program work?
Quite some time ago I read about SBA’s Mentor Protégé Program and thought it sounded like a good option for businesses trying to become more established in Government contracts. I’ve just revisited the SBA website and it appears Mentor Protégé is only used in conjunction with the 8(a) program.
I don’t remember reading that detail before so maybe it is new. So now I wonder, for those businesses not working towards an 8(a) program is there something similar to the Mentor-Protégé Program?

Mentor-protégé program will help contractor grow. The formal arrangements also allow companies to take on big projects with the support and help of its larger mentor.
For example the general contracting and roofing company Ameridian Specialty Services in Cincinnati had a gloomy economic forecast because constructions industry was severely affected by the recent recession.
However, it won contracting for $5 million solar photovoltaic project for Dayton Power Light. This is just the start according to Betty Owens, the owner of Ameridian. She expects more opportunities since Ameridian has entered into a U.S. Small Business Administration 8 which is a mentor-protégé agreement with Dayton-based Miller Valentine Commercial Construction.
This is a good example of how the mentor-protégé program designed to work. A lot of contracts are getting bigger and it affords the 8(a) firm the opportunity to pursue those contract with an approved mentor.
Ameridian could only bond up only to $1 million and an aggregate bonding that totals for $4 million only before its agreement with Miller-Valentine. The $5 million contract is small compared to that
