It depends on what you mean by chatting. Do you mean using a chat client such as Google Talk, MSN, AIM to communicate with your friends? If you are, then you can download many different apps to help you do this. These apps either make use of the WiFi connection on your phone or your data plan to connect to the internet. You can browse the available apps on the iTunes app store under the category “Social Networking”.
Both WiFi and 3G connection are available for your iPhone to connect to the internet. By default, the iPhone first searches for a WiFi connection to the internet. If it cannot find one, then it will make use of your 3G data service. You don’t have to use WiFi on your iPhone, this can be turned off in the Settings app for your phone. However, do bear in mind that if you do this, your phone will be running on your paid data service.
