How does the Toyota Camry compare to the Honda Accord?

What are the technical, and non-technical, differences between the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord? In terms of power, price, amenities, reviews and safety, which would you choose and why?

Price:

According to Edmunds.com the MSRP of the 2010 Camry varies between $19,395 for the base model and $29,045 for the XLE V6 (see http://www.edmunds.com/toyota/camry/2010/index.html ). The price range for the Accord is between $21,055 for the LE manual and $31,105 for the EX-L V6 with Nav (see http://www.edmunds.com/honda/accord/2010/index.html ).

It would be beyond the scope of this answer to compare the specs for all trim levels of both cars, so instead, let's compare the top of the line of the two models.

The specs for the Camry XLE V6 according to Edmunds (http://www.edmunds.com/new/2010/toyota/camry/101147485/specs.html ) are:

The specs for the top of the line Accord according to Edmunds.com (http://www.edmunds.com/new/2010/honda/accord/101201284/specs.html ) are:

You can find comparisons between trim levels of the Camry at http://www.edmunds.com/new/2010/toyota/camry/101147485/comparestyles.html and between the trim levels of the Accord at http://www.edmunds.com/new/2010/honda/accord/101201284/comparestyles.html .

To summarize from a driver's perspective (I recently test drove both 2010 models):

- The Accord's upgraded 4 cylinder engine (standard on the higher trim levels) is much peppier than that of the Camry 4 cylinder engine.
- The two 6 cylinder engines are very close in terms of horsepower and torque. Given the similar curb weights (3516 lbs for Camry XLE V6, 3585 lbs for Accord EX-L V6) the performance of the two top of the line models is similar in terms of acceleration.
- The handling of the Accord is more sporty than for the Camry, unless you choose the Camry SE which makes a good effort to provide more sporty handling.
- The Camry is much quieter than the Accord in terms of both road noise and operating noise and vibration.
- The leg room, especially in the back is significantly larger in the Camry.

Reviews of the two cars are available at Edmunds.com at:

What Edmunds.com says

The 2010 Toyota Camry has all the character of a washing machine from behind the wheel, but it's a plush-riding champ on the highway, and the optional V6 is the best in the midsize sedan segment. No wonder that the Camry remains one of the top family sedans on the market.

Pros

Roomy cabin, extraordinarily refined and fuel-efficient V6, quiet and cushy ride, excellent crash test scores.

Cons

Spotty fit and finish, spiritless handling.
- end quote -

- http://www.edmunds.com/honda/accord/2010/review.html:

- quote -
What Edmunds.com says

The 2010 Honda Accord offers an appealing combination of spaciousness, a relatively upscale feel and a reputation for reliability. However, its ride quality and overall performance are merely adequate for this segment.

Pros

Ample passenger space, quality fit and finish, excellent visibility, high resale value, available coupe body style.

Cons

Intrusive road noise, below-average brakes, button-heavy center stack, some find the seats uncomfortable.
- end quote -

The comparison between the two safety-wise brings out the Camry on top with five stars in all NHTSA frontal and side impact categories, compared to the Accord's five stars for front passenger protection in frontal and side impacts, but only three stars for rear passenger side-impact protection.

Of the two, I'd definitely choose the Camry for a family sedan, and probably the Accord if it was for one person or two without adults in the back seat.

In terms of power, price, amenities, reviews and safety, I would surely choose the Toyota Camry over the Honda Accord because in overall assessment as seen below the Camry comes out on top especially in automotive design and after sales services and parts.

its really about your personal taste, The Camry has more "breathe room" It has a bit more fun buttons as well as lights are a pretty blue.

The Accord is a bit bigger on the exterior, it also has less "breathe room" in the interior of the car.

My personal taste, I like to be able to breathe and to have move space. I do not wish to be crammed into a car that looks big but is in fact not what you thought at all. Don't get me wrong Honda is a great car but they all seem to look alike and to have the same shape, style, color everything seems to be the same no matter what the year is. camry at least changes it up a bit here and there. GOOD LUCK!!!

Since most of the answers on top has indicated the specifications, comparisons and price, I will just write my personal opinion. I would choose the Honda Accord over the Toyota Camry. Why? Here is my list:

1. I drove a Toyota and a Honda and I liked the ride of the Honda.
2. The cars I drove almost have the same mileage and year model but majority of the Toyota parts have been replaced already, some parts twice but the Honda is still keeping a lot of its original parts. By the way, the Toyota is a 1994 model, the Honda, 1995 model.
3. Engine power is definitely better in the Honda.
4. Fuel consumption is almost the same. But since I liked the engine power of the Honda, this is still a plus factor for me.
5. Visibility is better in the Honda, I could see the road better than the Toyota. Toyota seats are lower and the dashboard is higher.
