One gets the job of commissioner of the NFL not by appointment but by pre-selection of a pool of candidates first and then confirmation by the vote of the NFL owners. The current commissioner, Roger Goodell, was chosen after the retirement of Paul Tagliabue but his designation was not a sure thing. Before leaving the post Tagliabue initiated a search for his successor, appointing a committee headed by Dan Rooney, the owner of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Goodell had to garner the support of 22 teams in order to win the job. After two rounds of voting and several meetings between the owners, Goodell was finally confirmed in the position and his job is secure until the year 2015.
