How does one treat skin burns?

How can the severity of a skin burn be determined? What are the first aid procedures for these? Are there things that shouldn't be done?
Tip for best answer: M$0.25
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Skin burns are determined by degrees. First-degree burns are minor and only cause superficial pain and redness to the skin. This type of burn resolves in just a few days. Second-degree burns cause painful blisters, redness and swelling as seen in most sunburns. Third-degree burns affect the deepest layers of the skin causing scarring, numbness, nerve damage and a stiff, leathery appearance to the skin.

First-degree burns and second-degree sunburns may be treated at home with ice, aloe or soaking in an oatmeal bath. Severe second-degree and third-degree burns require immediate medical attention. A dry, sterile dressing can be placed over the burn before arriving at the hospital. At the hospital, care is usually in the form of wound cleaning and debridement along with medication. Severe cases may require skin grafting surgery.

When caring for an individual with a severe burn, make sure the person is not in contact with any smoldering materials and cover them with a blanket or coat. Do not remove any clothing that has melted into the individual’s skin, doing so may cause further damage or an infection.
