Falconry is probably the most demanding sport a person can get into.
It takes a great deal of time and a degree of commitment that very few people have.
Its not impossible though and there are a conciderable number of falconers in the USA.
The first thing that is required is a Federal and State falconry license, which is provided by your State Game and Fish department.
(I'm pretty sure that Hawaii is the only state that does not allow falconry)
You MUST have this license before you can legally possess a raptor.
The fines and penalties for possession of a raptor without the proper permits and license can be quite steep.
Each state which allows falconry has its own regulations and guidelines so I would highly reccommend contacting your state's Fish and Game department first off.

Obtaining a falconry license is no easy task.
First you are required to take a written test on biology, training, and veterinary aspects of raptors and you must score at least 80% to pass.
The next step requires you to locate a sponsor willing to train you for your two year apprenticeship.
After completing your apprenticship you must build suitable facility to house raptors and obtain the necessary equipment.
Once you reach this point your facilities will be inspected by a Game and Fish department representative of the state that your located in.
If you pass inspection and have gotten to this point you then will be required to pay the state fee and you become a licensed falconer.
Now you can trap a raptor and the real fun begins.
You now have an animal that will be solely relient upon you for its every need.
I would suggest subscribing to American Falconry magazine, rates and details can be found at;

If you really want to learn from a master I reccommend getting in touch with Nancy Cowan who is a Master Falconer and works with the New Hampshire School of Falconry.
Heres her contact info;
Nancy Cowan at 603-464-6213 or by E-mail falconers@comcast.net

I worked with the State of Missouri Consevation Department for many years as a bird of prey rehabilitation station along with an agent who was in charge of that paticular department and have personal experince with everything from Krestrels to Bald Eagles.
It was a very rewarding experience even with the dissapointments that naturally occur when dealing with wild birds of prey.
I concidered pursuing falconry, but the commitment was one I just could not make at the time.
Working with hawks and falcons is an amazing experience, the bond between person and bird is something I can only say is spiritually rewarding.
For the dedicated person it is well worth the effort.
The links I provided in my sources will put you on the right track if you decide to investigate this sport further.
