He worked first as a bartender in 1982, then computer salesman, but was fired from his sales job for meeting a client to create new business instead of opening a store.
With his time and the contacts he made from the sales job, he started a computer company which he sold for $6 million in 1990.
Not content with that money, he and a friend started Audionet, which became Broadcast.com, which made 13.5 million in the 2nd quarter of 1999.
What really made him his money was the internet boom, when Yahoo bought broadcast.com for almost $6 billion, afterwards he diversified his money to prevent against the upcoming internet crash. At that point he really didn't need any more money and was now doing things that focused more on his happiness, such as owning the Dallas Mavericks, working with Sirius Satellite Radio, ABC for a reality show called the Benefactor.
