How does JavaFX compare with Flash?

Tip for best answer: M$0.25
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Since JavaFX was first introduced as a new RIA tool at JavaOne in May this year, a confusion has been floating around too. That is, what is JavaFX anyway and what’s up with a new scripting language called JavaFX Script? Now, Joshua Marinacci of Sun’s Swing Toolkit group finally came out and try to clear the dust out. He’s answer is JavaFX != JavaFx Script.

In the same titled blog post, he first cleared that JavaFX is a client technology that “a bunch of new stuff that focuses on the client side; on the user.” The reason that Sun making JavaFX is to “build the apps of the future.” What he didn’t say was that Java has been considered server side technology for quite some time already. And the server side has been erosioning by all sorts of opensource technologies. Just looking at Flash and new baby Silverlight, Sun has to come back to client side to be in the play.

He was absolutely right on this, “The apps of the future are things like iPhoto, Twitter, Dashboard widgets, and high-res book readers. Apps that exist both locally and on the network. Apps that have collaboration as a core feature. And, perhaps most importantly, apps that just look & feel awesome! The apps of the future are Filthy Rich Clients. The apps of the future live on the desktop, phone, web, and TV. And eventually on new gadgets that we haven’t thought of yet.”

So, if JavaFX is a lot more than JavaFX Script, then what it is. According to Joshua, JavaFX is the combination of JavaFX Script, Designer Tools of “something closer to Flash Designer than NetBeans”, JavaFX Mobile and the Consumer JRE.

At the end, He said, JavaFX will be the kickass apps of future and “kicking ass is a job requirements!” I’m just wondering, whose rear ends Sun is trying to kick.
