Hepatitis virus can be quite serious that many days of work could be missed due to hospitalization. People with chronic hepatitis C, can get terribly sick and die. Death from hepatitis A is fairly rare in healthy young people. But contraction of Hepatitis A might mean months of being unable to work or go to school.
In rare cases, hepatitis C can be passed from a mother to her unborn baby. Hepatitis B virus can be spread from an infected mother to her infant during birth. Elevated liver enzymes causes pre-eclampsia. To prevent spread of HBV from infected mothers to their infants, every woman should have her blood tested for hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) during each pregnancy or another shot call HBIG (hepatitis B immune globulin) soon after birth to prevent infection.
