How does food become certified Kosher?

How can I find out the exact process for making food Kosher certified? Can any food become Kosher certified or are there some that can't undergo the process?

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

While most definitions state that kosher is food preparation according to Jewish law, it is far more complex than that simple definition.

First of all, meat and dairy products are never mixed. In a Kosher kitchen, there are separate utensils and cookware for meat dishes and dairy dishes. Meat meals are not cooked on dairy stoves or in dairy ovens and vise versa. There is no such thing as a cheeseburger in a kosher kitchen.

Certain types of meat are forbidden, such as pork, as well as shellfish and some birds. Only animals that chew cuds and have cloven hooves are edible, according to kosher law, or Kashrut, which means “pure to eat.” And only fish with scales and fins, such as tuna and salmon, are edible.

Animals are ritually slaughtered in a humane manner, then bled and salted. All kosher dairy products must come from kosher animals. A kitchen is certified once it has been inspected by a rabbi certified in Kashrut, and ritually cleansed by his team. The Orthodox Union and Star-K Online can give you more information on getting certified in your area.

Kosher cooking can be challenging, as well as rewarding, especially when learning to replace dairy products in meat meals. Good luck and Shalom!
