Gmail's chat feature works very well together. One of the primary reasons that Google built chat into Gmail is to help simplify your life. Often, exchanging emails can be tedious and take too much time. Your contacts and other people you email will automatically be added to your gChat. It is typically on the left hand side of your screen, unless you use Gmail's Lab Features and enable chat on the right. This is more of a preference situation. You can also use gChat as your normal instant messenger. They also allow you to login to your AIM and chat with people too. So, I definitely recommend that you use gChat. It will make things easier for you. Your email and instant messenger life will be a great deal smoother, because it will be all in one place.
