How does an inductive probe work?

Bunnyphuphu Ghost Question #2

I was channel surfing and yes, I ran into another ghost show!
(please don't chastise me... I know they're silly!)

I turned on 'Ghost Adventures' and while the ego-centric host was hopping around, I saw him pull out 'The Talker' or an inductive probe that takes electro-magnetic waves and converts them into words.

Part of me thinks it's impossible and wants to know how it works.
The other part of me thinks it's just malarkey and a marketing tool for these silly ghost shows.

Here is a link to a short video showing them using the equipment
http://www.travelchannel.com/Video_&_Photos/Video_Detail?playerId=1388782660&categoryId=1381648282&lineupId=1774292824&titleId=23069740001

I'd like someone to explain the actual science in this equipment and give me a decent opinion on this. It looks like ghost business is quite lucrative these days!

There is a well-known (by sound if not by name) instrument which uses an active inductance-capacitance circuit to produce various sounds: the theremin, named after its inventor.

http://www.137.com/theremin/leon_theremin300c.jpg

Electromagnetic induction was also used by the former Soviet Union in the form of passive listening devices, including the "Great Seal bug" which was planted in the office of the US ambassador. Their designer? Leon Theremin.

http://www.pimall.com/nais/pivintage/images/greatsealbar.jpg

The ghosthunters' "induction probe" would work like a theremin; changes in the electromagnetic field created by the probe would be converted into sound. Note, however, that whoever is holding the probe would be in a perfect position to "play" it as well, and modern theremins are quite portable:

Unfortunately, the video in your link is "currently unavailable;" I'd like to see what their probe looks like.

Here, here! I agree with brian. (it's too early for a beer though... I'll just stick with my morning coffee)
@badaspie - here is the main link. Just look on the right middle side of the page and click on 'communicate with the spirits'. It will pull up their video.

I am growing quite tired of answers by @badaspie...
I was under the impression that advanced AI machines weren't allowed on Mahalo. I firmly believe that only beings of similar intelligence to humans should be allowed to compete. I'm going to go and enjoy a beer now in protest...

@bunnyphuphu -

That link doesn't work, either; it hangs up while "loading player."

Now I'll just wait for someone to say that this proves that ghosts are real, that they can detect my skepticism, and that they're blocking my access to the video....

Have no fear @bunnyphuphu, I'm sure @albanian will be around soon enough to chastise me for my appreciation for "light" beer and disdain for higher intelligence..

They were using the name of a real tool. Inductive probes read chemical concentration levels by casting a magnetic field from two charged coils that are encapsulated in PVC. These magnetic coils never come in direct contact with corrosive chemicals and hard water minerals.

None of this has anything to do with converting electro-magnetic waves into words. This can be done by any radio - provided the electo-magnetic waves were produced in the first place by a radio broadcaster converting words into radio signals, which are a kind of electromagnetic waves.

There are no reliable reports of anyone converting electro-magnetic waves to words unless some living human being used a machine to convert the words to electromagnetic waves.

A link to the inductive probe advertisement I quoted is below.

I think that @davidx is correct about the true nature of an inductive probe.

The tool that Zach Bagans is using is better known by it's alternative scientific name: The Basewave Signal Detector.

BS detectors are useful in many situations, but unfortunately, they tend to malfunction in clinical tests, therefore their exact composition is still unknown.

They tend to work best when operated by a BS professional such as Zach.

@brian.san: I think you have it right re: BS detector and Zack!
@buddawiggi: That video sounds like me before I've had my coffee in the morning.
@davidx: You have a great point there with the editing process of these shows to make the 'words' seem less random.
Also, liked the Denver link. I lived around the corner from that same building in the Lodo area.
The building I lived in was built in the 1860's and had been a brothel and a speak easy complete with tunnels!

On the video they refer to a paranormal puck. Someone indeed sells a device they call the paranormal puck. A link to the users manual is below. Hope my link to a www site hosting a .pdf file works for you.

http://www.digitaldowsing.com/DD_Images/Store_Media/Paranormal_Puck.pdf

On a video they can edit stuff they consider irrelevant, such as words that don't mean anything or sound like they might come from a ghost. Below is an article by a reporter for Rocky Mountain News. The words sound much more random than the ones we see in the video, and we read a little about how the mind can search for meaning in random words.

(scratching head...)
I'm wondering if I have the correct equipment in mind.
Did you see the short video? Maybe you could tell me if it's another tool or called something else? Any help would be much appreciated!

An Inductive Probe/Conductive Probe Emulator is designed to replace conductive probes at a much lower cost than existing inductive probe systems. The conductivity probe simulator is usable with any industrial controller that uses a standard two wire conductivity probe interface. A continuously variable semiconductor resistive element is employed to match the conductivity of any conductive probe. The system uses the inductive probe reading to adjust the resistive element to the correct value. The conductivity probe simulator can be configured to emulate any conductivity probe with any probe constant by downloading configuration parameters to the probe controller or by setting configuration switches on the controller module. Additionally, the inventive probe simulator is equipped with an embedded temperature sensing element, giving the system a capability to perform a temperature correction in the controller section, if necessary.

hi, I'm not laughing. I'm going to ask that no one laugh at me. :) I don't think you will bunnyphuphu :)

I believe something like this could be within the realms of some type of reality, yes. Sometimes, I believe humans can have a "7th Sense" and see and feel things that other humans cannot. They can almost see right through other people's entire soul.

I call it "traipsing in another realm". I don't talk with anyone about it, unless they indicate interest. Or if they already seem to have a sense about it. It is kind of like the book "Findhorn Garden" and the Garden Fairies...

I am not sure what they are doing on your above video, but one of my kids suggested we look here:

http://www.pasadenaghosthunters.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=129

http://www.pasadenaghosthunters.com/

If this is not what you are looking for, perhaps a post to this forum and they can research it?

Hi @krysstel,

I have no proof to offer one way or the other regarding the concept of feeling the presence of a human soul. There is definitely more that we don't know in the world than what we do. I also like to keep an open mind.

But I am convinced that the ghost hunters in the video that @bunnyphuphu posted are phony.
As @davidx pointed out, a "Paranormal Puck" is available for purchase (seems to require Windows 98, though copyright date is 2008?) and contains the disclaimer "Above all have fun! Life is too short not to laugh!"

thank you @briansan. have you read about the Findhorn garden? google it. fascinating... Keep the ears and eyes and soul open. you will see all sorts of things. :)

Thanks @krysstel. You have some good links and points.
I myself have had true paranormal experiences, but I cannot look at these TV shows without giggling.
They do have an entertainment value, just not the type that they expected.

@bunnyphuphu. i THOUGHT you did have those experiences. the kinds of questions you ask and the things you laugh at portrays it. also that you do not "brag about it", to me, shows a true believer, someone who truly understands that it DOES happen. and not just for "show biz" :) cheers!

While the above people have supplied INCREDIBLE amounts of research and data, I'd simply like to put my two cents in (at the GREAT risk of sounding "unhelpful"). My hat is off once again to our Mahalo community for teaching me something today!

The guys on Ghost Adventures are (in my opinion) WAY less than credible. I feel the show is more sensationalist (more an a National Enquirer take) and capitalizing on the popularity on the OTHER show (which is very credible, scientific and accurate). I once saw the host get "posessed" by a (female) spirit and I pretty much didn't believe a second of his experience. That said, it's unfortunate since the rest of the data they had collected had pretty much sold me - until then. This "experience" took away any and all credibility (video, audio and other, like the EMV (EMP?) work which was good, btw) and made me question the show as a whole.

I'm a pretty big fan of Ghost Hunters, converesly, as they approach (as you know) from a scientific debunking mindset. Which is cool, because they try everything and will (after all experimentation has been exhausted) admit that the place is haunted by ghosties.

I couldn't have said it better!
When watching a B-grade reality spook show such as this, I can't help but wonder about the equipment they use.
I also like the fact that Ghost Hunters tries to debunk before bunking a project too.

A highly accurate electromagnetic-induction-type conductivity and dielectric constant meter is obtained by using a calibration box (instrument) and a structure as below. The conductivity and dielectric constant meter employs an electromagnetic inductive probe which includes a primary transformer composed of a toroidal core with a wound primary coil, a secondary transformer composed of a toroidal core with a wound secondary coil, an electrostatic shield shielding the transformers, and cables that connect the probe to a meter. To eliminate the electrostatic capacity produced by causes other than electromagnetic induction, the structure of the probe is symmetrical. In a first embodiment, the secondary transformer is placed between two parts of the primary transformer, which has two cores of the same shape that are placed symmetrically. The structure, including the primary and secondary transformers, gaps in the electrostatic shields, and cables, are symmetrical with respect to a plane perpendicular to the central axis of the ring shapes and passes through the center of the annular core of the secondary transformer.
