How does an aspiring actor who lives near Hollywood get an agent?
You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Get a list of the agencies that you can send your picture into that will take on new clients. There are books about it there. The agent's office will call if interested. There are different ways. They have nights that actor's pay for where agents come and listen to scenes. It is possible to get an agent that way. If they are in a play they can invite them. It is good to network in Hollywood with other actors. It helps to know people. The agent might find them if they have a certain look. It is good to take acting classes. It helps to be in SAG since that makes it more professional. You can be in that by getting a line, etc. It is difficult. Information is available in theatrical bookstores and papers there. There are trade magazines that have lists of agents
