How does a person get a message out to anywhere in the world?
Historically, a company sent the same message to people and let them distribute the message. Very Expensive. All this over.
Clay Shirky says, "The Audience can talk back. Size is the square of the participants" and "the group creating conversation is not good at media and groups good at media are not good at conversation in the 20th century."

I'd say it's a bit like a chain reaction.
You might for example have created a really funny video of someone shooting a bottle rocket out of their behind. You show it to your circle of friends, and since they like the video and like you, they each share the video with their circle, and so on and so on, until it becomes truly "viral".
It would seem that the content would have to be a combination of original, entertaining, and human-centric, able to impact the heart, mind, funny bone of the viewer.

Well say you start the chain with a very controversial idea, and start it within a group which is likely to be opposed to the idea. For example, visit a Christian forum and tell them atheism is the smart choice, or visit a Linux forum and make a post on how Windows 7 will blow any flavor of Linux away.
Fans on both sides of the fence might be eager to defend their opinions (and their egos) and the discussion could spread as both sides get more of their respective members involved. If the discussion continues, each new post could foster new discussion and the cycle continues, but I'm sure over time the originator would need to post a fresh variation on their original controversial topic. At the beginning they might have suggested atheism is better than Christianity to light the fire, but to keep it burning they might later say that Jesus Camp is a breeding ground for bigotry or that atheism equals immorality. This might foment unrest and get the discussion ball rolling once more.
