How does a person choose the right tie for a shirt?

Few years ago, I attended a business conference and lots of important and influential men in the business world were present at the event. After the guest speakers finished with their speeches, the main organizer of the event was called upon to give his vote of thanks. As the man walked up to the platform, I noticed that he wore a navy blue shirt a burgundy or wine colored shirt and a pink tie…WOW! I have never seen such a combination in my life. The woman next to me said she liked it, but I didn’t think the tie was suitable for the shirt. How can one pick the perfect tie for a shirt?

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

It can be daunting tasks at time to figure out which tie matches a shirt.
These are some things to keep in mind when pairing a necktie and shirt:

1. For white shirts, you can match any color tie with it. And this will also apply to very light pastel blue shirts.

2. These are some great color combination that work well:
A dark blue shirt will go well with red, light blue or orange tie
A light blue/aqua shirt goes well with brown, red, pink, orange, or green tie
Pink pastel shirt will fit pink, green, dark blue, or light blue tie
Green pastel shirt will match orange, blue, purple, red or pink tie
Red shirts matches green, purple, or light blue ties.

Here's a trick to know if the color will go well with your shirt is to find a tie that has the same color pattern of the tie-the other color on the tie will most likely to match. This is of course true unless you shop in a clown shop.

3. Another tip is to observe the patterns. A good patterned tie matches well with a solid colored shirt. As long as the color matches, you can mat any patterned tie with a solid shirt.

If you have patterned shirt with a patterned tie, make sure that the patterned are not the same like both stripes, both dots, both paisley.
You can only have one strong pattern because two bold patterns will likely crash.
Don't wear character ties unless you're 10 years old.

5. Be sure that the texture of the ties does not clash with that of the shirt. A rougher material would appear more casual while a silk tie is much more formal.

If you have trouble matching/ mixing or coordinating colors ask a female friend whose style you admire to tag along. Generally you want to compliment the color of the shirt and the suit but also your skin tones. You can wear ties within the same color family as your shirt but you should choose a tie with texture or tone on tone pattern. Look at the displays to get hints of color combos. Try something out of your comfort zone, ask for feedback from trusted colleagues or friends.

When choosing a tie you want to try not to have clashing colors, or clashing designs. I prefer to go with simple designs so I don't have to think too much. One thing that I've learned is super important is your knot. Employers or potential partners notice the small things. A loose or sloppy tie can put across insecurity or nervousness. That's why I use some great tie accessories
