Marriage is a very strong bond between man and woman in Islam. It is considered as a very highly ranked and most valid relationship between non-mehram man and woman. Muslims are taught to respect this relationship and not end it for trivial reasons. If there is a rational reason, and the partners both want to end the marriage, then the man has to say the word “talaq” thrice which literally means I divorce you.
If they are divorced then this process is irreversible. They cannot immediately remarry unless they get married to another person and divorced again and not with the intention of reversing their divorces. Hence it is discouraged. But Islam teaches Muslims to do this disagreeable task with superior conduct. If they have to end the relationship, they should do even this task in a respectable way. If divorce is not intended, they can live separately if they both agree on it, but meanwhile they cannot touch any other person.
