How do you use Mahalo Answers?

This is a question for the people ANSWERING questions:

1. How do you filter down to the questions that are relevant to you?

2. How do you stop it from interfering with your day-job?

3. What IS your day job?

4. Do you prioritize questions with tips?

5.How much time a day do you spend answering questions?
Tip for best answer: M$5.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

  1.  I have quite a few areas of knowledge/interest, so it's not that hard to filter down to the questions of interest to me. However, I find when I want something that is most compelling for me, I go to one or two categories to filter down the results.
  2. I actually use M.A. to enhance my day job. I often get stuck analyzing one topic until I'm mentally numb. Once I hit the wall, I often go to M.A., find a moderately tough question - preferably with a time deadline before I lose bonus points - and respond. It's the mental "flush" that helps me go back to the original task with a fresh outlook. I do this only on breaks of course! ;)
  3. I have more than one job: I work thirty hours for the State as an analyst, and the rest of my life I work with my husband in the real estate & construction field (Oh, yea, we're ROLLING in the dough right now!) I also do a bit of writing/training in the intercultural communication field.
  4. Tips are not the highest incentive for me. If anything, it's belt level. I'm not competing with other answerers, but I do have standards of ongoing advancement for me.
  5. Time I spend varies widely. Today was a maximum productivity day at my own business after a night of insomnia (woke up at 3:00 a.m. and made the mistake of checking Twitter, ended up caught up in Prager's break-in drama!), so I had to be focused. Aside from a quick, opinion-based answer while I was on hold, I did little on M.A. until time to plop my butt down in front of the evening news. Other days, I let Mahalo capture my full attention for the sheer fun of it. Average time is probably 60-90 minutes total per day.
Thanks! Now I'm going to catch up on some sleep..

1. I just scan the questions, and see if there are any that I have any chance of asking.

2. I only do a little each day - an hour or two total on the Internet, with MA being some of it.

3. I'm a student.

4. Used to, but not anymore.

5. See #2.

1. Personally, I have never found myself going by the category view - (ok, maybe only when Im bored)... I usually start with the questions that have not been answered, for the simple reason that I believe everybody deserves an answer. As I have a very wide range of interests, and consider myself well-read, I always make an effort to answer all the type of questions I can.
Only rarely do I answer questions where some expertise is required, as I think it's best that the experts handle that. I like to restrict myself to the regualr mundane stuff that most people would know, but that I belive requires a clear or better answer.

2. Well, I have my own business, and I do a lot of freelance work online, so it doesn't make much of a difference there.

3. I run a startup in India focused on content generation, and we also develop told for SEO and affiliate marketing.

4. Not really, the only way it helps is to ring the question on top, where you can see it. In fact, I prefer to go for the lesser or untipped questions because of reason 1 above.

5.Never kept track of it, maybe about a couple of hours a day!

1. Basically I just skim the recent questions so far.

2. I don't look an answers during the day. I basically play around with it during my normal surfing time.

3. Director of Engineering for a software consulting firm.

4. Not really. I answer questions that I either know the answer to or I would like to know the answer to and research it.

5. 30-60 minutes unless a good question comes up.

1. After skimming the main page, I basically stick to the Entertainment & Business questions.
2. It's usually a time filler - while I'm waiting for something to download or if I'm early for a conference call. I'll poke in after hours to see if there's anything interesting that I might know.
3. Director of Sales for ProjectLocker (www.projectlocker.com)
4. Sure, but the questions with the biggest tips tend to be the ones that, frankly, would turn into a full-day's work anyway, so I stay with the penny stocks.
5. All together, maybe an hour.

1. Like many others, I basically just skim through the questions. I start on the main page and work my way back. Occasionally, I will look at questions based on a specific category, usually 'education' or 'beauty and style.' While browsing, I stop at any question that I: a) have knowledge of already, b) find interesting, or c) know a good resource of information on the given topic.

2. It doesn't interfere with my day job at all. I don't answer questions while I am working my day job because I don't have time!

3. I teach 8th grade math and Algebra I.

4. No. Interest level of a question is more important to me than tip. However, a tip always makes a less interesting question more intriguing!

5. It varies based on what else is going on in my life. Right now, I'm on a school break, so I am spending more time here than usual. Next week, I doubt I will have much time for Mahalo Answers at all. It will be a good summer hobby.

1. I skim back to where I left off (if it's in the first 2-3 pages), and then I go by category to categories I'm very comfortable with, or questions that are so intriguing I want to learn more myself.

2. I work from home, so I have set aside time in my routine to work on it. Often I work on it while waiting on something/someone. While waiting on my kids to finish their math, for example, I was able to answer four questions. Then they needed help and then I had to work on my business, so it was a couple of hours before I came back and did more.

3. Educational consultant and homeschooling mom

4. Not really, except that they're first on the first page so I see them first

5. Some days I spend 2-3 hours; other days, under an hour. For example, I had my taxes done today and had to spend several days preparing for it; and last weekend my family had a bunch of activities, so I haven't had a big chunk of time for nearly a week.
