How do you understand tabs on a guitar?

Tip for best answer: M$1.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I'm not exactly sure why, but with most guitar tabs, you have to imagine your guitar turned upside down. It usually looks like this:
E|-------
B|-------2
G|-----1
D|--------
A|--------
E|--------

You'd figure the top E string was your guitar's top string, but it's not. Always remember that tabs are flipped compared to how you hold your guitar (unless you're a crazy southpaw who uses a right-handed guitar like Jimi Hendrix). The numbers in tabs represent the fret number on which your put your finger to play the note. Keep an eye on what each string is tuned to, as their are an infuriating amount of different scale tunings to give the musicians exactly what they want to hear. Tune your guitar according to the tab to get the most direct interpretation of the song you are attempting to learn.
