How do you train to run in a marathon?

What are good workout routines for marathon training? Does lifting weights help you build up your endurance?

I would recommend checking out this site for a training plan: www.crossfitendurance.com

I've been using it to train for a 5k, but know of multiple people who've used it for ultramarathon type races.

Lifting weights will help you be generally stronger and less prone to injury, which is important for distance runners as injury rates are surprisingly quite high.
