Gently, very gently. You have shared moments together so be honest but be gentle. In person, face to face is a must.

Hi @parfait. First of all, don't ever tell them by phone, sms, or e-mail. This is the cowards way out, and it's rude. If you think it's really over, then the proper thing to do, is tell them in person. It's very hard to face someone, especially if you have been in some sort of relationship, but I feel, you owe it to that person to tell them how you feel, and why you want it to be over. Just imagine yourself on the other end of this question, and how you would want to be told. Be honest, tell them the reason it's over, and explain your feelings. Pick a place where you can talk privately,or go for a walk and explain why it's over. That's my advice.

It depends on their mood and temperament, how long you have known them.
If you are in the least bit worried that they will make a loud fuss or get loud or violent, make sure you are in a public place with others around you.
If this is a neighbor or co-worker that will continue to appear in your life, this makes it more difficult.
Just say, so sorry my dear, but it's all over.
