2. Connect the consoles together using the ethernet cable.
3. Each of you sign in to your individual gamertags
4. When you start the game, the option for system link will appear on Player 1's screen. Make sure you make the match so anyone can join.
5. Player 2 then chooses quick or custom match, and selects the game started by Player 1

If you are wanting to start a game over XBOX LIVE, start a game like normal, set the multiplayer setting to "INVITE ONLY" once you get to the inventory management screen, invite your friend into the game. If you wish to talk to each other during the game, I would suggest starting a XBOX LIVE party. Otherwise, once you leave the inventory management screen, you cannot talk to each other via the microphone.
Personal experience. Multiplayer is the only way to go!
