How do you, successfully and permanently, stop biting your nails?

I've tried everything. But inevitably something stressful happens and POOF they are gone. I know its more professional to actually have nails vs nubs.
Tip for best answer: M$0.25
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

when i was young... parents would put a really nasty tasting solution on the fingertips.

a little older... take notice of how your nails look and have a file handy to keep them shaped. when you get stressed you can file instead and it can take your mind off the stress just long enough to save your nails...

or, if you are doing pretty well, but have only an occasional stressful time, and you can recognize it... just put bandaids or tape over the ends of your fingers during the most stressful time, then remove when you are more relaxed.

by putting some kind of barrier, either that nasty solution which i do not recommend, or the bandaids or tape, every time your fingers reach your mouth it will be a physical reminder... and it will re-train your brain.

ultimately that is what you are going for... behavior training. stop the nail biting behavior and exchange it for something else. you just need to find the proper trigger for you. it will be slightly different for everyone.

might also help to watch videos on just what kind of bacteria is around us... if it is on your hands from a doorknob and you put it in your mouth you could get something really nasty

Nail biting is a common habit and one that's not easy to kick. For some, this habit occurs when nervous or possibly when bored. However, following these steps may help you manage it and possibly quit altogether.

Step 1 Purchase a bitter-tasting formula made expressly to stop nail biting. Choose the worst-tasting solution you can find.

Step 2Wash hands every morning with soap and water and towel dry.

Step 3 Apply a liberal amount of the solution to the nails, cuticles and surrounding skin.

Step 4Continue to reapply the solution throughout the day as it wears off.

Step 5 Reapply the solution at bedtime. Make sure the bitter taste is always present on your nails.
Things You'll Need:
Washcloths
Anti-nail-biting Solutions
Cotton Swabs
Exfoliating Cleanser
Manicure Kits
Nail Files
Nail Strengthening Polish
Cotton Swabs
