How do you stop your dog from digging under your fence?

We have stopped leaving our dogs outside when we aren't home, we are so afraid they will dig out and get run over. We can only leave the house without them for 6 hours or so, and then we have to come home and let them out. Our yard is dirt with a chain link fence. It is a 1/2 acre lot, so there is more than 500 feet of fence. (Only the back yard is fenced.)

With that much fence, it's tricky. When my dad fenced in an area for his dog, he actually folded chain link into an L shape, and covered it with about a foot of gravel. So, if the dog dug down to the bottom of the fence, she would be standing on more fence. In order to get out, she would have to dig out a large area, going around and then under the fence material that was originally flush against the ground.

Maybe the best option for that large of a space would be an invisible fence. They bury receivers, and so if the dog crossed the line, they would get a little shock. You could put the receivers right by the fence, where they would only cross the invisible border if they started digging.

Take the time to train the dogs. Animals bad behavior can be changed with the proper training. If necessary electrify the fence it is fairly inexpensive.

Could you make a smaller fenced in area for your dog? Then use invisible around that smaller area. Some people leash their dogs under a tree with lots of water and a little food. Have you considered that?

We used to cordon of the area with chicken wire. Every time the dog would go over to the fence we'd yell out "NO" and eventually she got the message.

I think putting something under the fence into the ground is probably the way to go. A few other answerers here have mentioned good solutions. I know of someone who tried an electric fence close to the ground. It didn't work -- the dog just got scared and dug faster!
