How do you open a 2009 iMac so that you can upgrade the hard drive?

Tip for best answer: M$3.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

You want to upgrade the iMac Hard Drive... Here are the practical video tutorials that will lead you thru the entire upgrading process.

First, a general crash course on how to disassemble a common 20 inch or 24 inch iMac (which by the way... are not true 2009 models), but the example will serve for practical purposes. (March 2009)...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7MTyEnXxgDk

Then, a step by step disassembling process of a 20 inch iMac (this is in reality a 2008 conceived model built during the 1st. semester of the 2009 season, thus technically one may considered it a 2009 iMac) for the replacement of its Hard Drive, in this case for a new Seagate 1.5 Terabytes. (July 2009)...

The whole hard drive fitting process will take around 30 minutes.

Now, for the top of the line new iMac 27 inch (a 2nd. semester true 2009 iMac model), a fast teardown video lighting tour for the replacement of its Hard Drive in 9 easy steps. (October 2009)...

I guess this is the 2009 iMac series you were thinking on when asked the question. The presentation was made by iFixit http://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/iMac-Intel-27-Inch/1236/1; take a look at the site where there is a similar but more detailed explanation and lots of guided images with 24 disassembly steps, for the iMac 27 inch (this is a must see that will complement the video).

Remember that the inner side of most iMac models differs from one year to another and only the 21 inch and 27 inch Quad Core i5 or i7 iMac´s are the true 2009 season models.

Hope this will help you.

ifixit is definitely the best resource for very detailed instructions for accomplishing things like this. Here are the instructions for a replacing the Hard Drive in a 20" iMac - http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Repair/Installing-iMac-Intel-20-Inch-EMC-2133-and-2210-Hard-Drive-Replacement/1008/1

Definitely search the site if your machine varies from this model. They have tutorials for every type of iMac.

Cheers!

Mike

I know this question has received some great answers already but I do want to make a point that replacing the hard drive in an iMac WILL VOID your warranty with Apple. The only user serviceable item is the RAM. Find an authorized Apple repair center if you must have a different HD installed.

That is absolutely right. So it all depends on the costumer if he or she wants to open the iMac and change the HD at their own risk knowing that the warrranty will be void.

I love how everyone falls for the WILL VOID YOUR WARRANTY trick. Opening a computer and changing out a hard drive doesn't make it spontaneously com bust. No reason to pay Apple to do it.
