How do you make a living as a freelance author?
What are some tips that will help a new freelance author learn how to make a living from freelance writing?
You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

First you start by applying to places like BrightHub, AssociatedContent, Break Studios, Ezine and start writing articles. Once you get the background you need you can apply at Demand Studios, they pay $15 per article. I have a friend who makes $2k a month working for them. But they are very difficult to get accepted, you have to have a writing background.
I also suggest you go to Affiliated Forums like DigitalPoint, WarriorForum and WickedFire and offer your services as a writer. They look for native English speakers but the pay isn't much, however with enough experience you can get steady clients and make decent money.
From there you can learn how to write e-books which you can sell yourself on your own websites or have people from the Affiliated Forums sell them for you, anywhere between $27-$37 a book based on your shared knowledge of whatever topic is your specialty.
You can write for bloggers, offer services as a writer on Craigslist and look for job offers on Craigslist list under writing/editing and writing gigs.
Good luck!
You could also apply for Mahalo, but after you've had some experience writing articles would be best, in my opinion.
