How do you know when a marriage is really over?

Tip for best answer: M$1.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Since I am separated from my second husband I think I probably know the answer to this one. I figured out that my marriage was over when my husband said he was unhappy, he couldn't live with me anymore, and he had to change his life.

Even though I cheated on him 8 years ago, we remained living together because we thought we couldn't afford to get divorced. We also have 5 dogs that we consider our "kids" that we both got together and we were both responsible for them. I have a house with a big fenced in back yard and it is very hard to find an apartment or even a house to rent that will let you have 5 dogs. We quit getting any more puppies or dogs 8 years ago because we both knew, that sooner or later, one of us was moving out. We were no longer "in love" with each other.

He moved out in November but we really haven't talked about a divorce-mainly because we had no reason to. Now he's found a new woman to love and he's told me we are definitely over and that we will be getting a divorce in the next six months and I believe him. Now it's my turn to change my life. I will always love him and he is possibly still my best friend because we both care so much for each other. But we will never be "in love" or a couple ever again. :-)

Lots of good answers but for me the relationship is over the moment I ask the question, "is it over".

It's the thought that makes it so. Everything that follows is just a formality.

Sometimes two people are simply too different to have a life together even if they deeply respect each other. It's time to end it when you don't see eye to eye one the major issues and you know that you'll both be better off alone. Divorce doesn't have to be messy but bitterness makes it that way. There are certain people that simply shouldn't be married. It's not necessarily a question of them finding finding the "right" person, sometimes they are just wrong for marriage. Sometimes you know it's over when a spouse hurts you in a way that can never be forgiven. You're only on this earth once and everyone has a right to be happy weather that includes being married or not.

When you can honestly say "I don't love them anymore". There is a big difference between not "in love" and no longer "loving" them. The passion will fade, and the excitement will too....but when you can say you don't love them....its over.

A marriage, or any relationship for that matter, is over when one party (or both) are unwilling to continue working on the relationship. The opposite of love is not hate, it's indifference.

I'm sure it's very hard to tell (I've never been divorced myself), since personal feelings are complex and can change day by day. I think that in general though, any person getting ready to leave any relationship can ask themselves a few questions:

1. What would it take to fix this? Am I actually willing to do that?
2. If we do fix this, will my heart be here, or will I still be looking for a new, better relationship?
3. Am I healthy and safe in this relationship? Does this relationship contribute to me being the kind of person I want to be?

The answers to those questions can be pretty telling, if a person is honest with themselves. While a marriage is over if the other party isn't willing to work on it, you can't control them. You can only control yourself, so you need to know what you really want and are willing to do.
