How do you know the difference between your two identical twin friends?

I had a classmate in middle school who had an identical twin (or they looked identical to me). I could tell the difference if I saw them together, but not if I found one of them in a context in which it was hard to tell who was who, like outside our classroom. We wore uniforms at that school, so that made it harder.
Since I've always been a bit of a weirdo, I just asked them directly who they were: "Hey, what's up? David or Fernando?". At first they thought it was strange, perhaps a bit impolite, but they got used to it pretty soon and just answered who they were or said something like "Hey. What's up? I'm David" every time.
