How do you keep track of queries you've sent out to potential freelance writing gigs?

Do you use:
(1) computer software
(2) notebooks
(3) websites
(4) a combination of one or all of these tools

Why did you select this method? How long have you used this method? Did you have to go through a lot of trial and error first?

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

A log book or ledger book that you can write all the appropriate information and that has columns so you can have an entry for Date sent, Expected Response, Actual Response, etc... I keep a sheet of stamps in the book to hold my place. Getting out a log book and writing entries into it forms a kind of process or routine that helps when you have to send out queries and wait for responses. It gives you a little more to occupy yourself with. Also it is dedicated to that one purpose which helps me focus my energy on that purpose. I don't have to scroll through files and scan my desktop for my Query log. I just grab my log book. I've been using this method for about one year.

I used Salesforce.com when I was a freelance writer, and continue to use it now in a different career.

Signup for a Salesforce.com account (Group Edition accounts are $99 per year - a great deal relative to the cost of higher levels). You can track "leads" and run reports on how old each lead is, to see which clients you need to get back in touch with. You can also email from within Salesforce, so all your correspondence with a client is in one place. (This is especially helpful for catching up with previous clients every once in awhile and seeing if they could use any more writing.)

There's definitely a learning curve in terms of setting up Salesforce, but it's well worth it, and it actually works pretty well even without customization.
