How do you keep cool when it is really hot with no AC or Fans.

Tip for best answer: M$0.25
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

For me, I always try to take a nice dip in a pool, or in the ocean if that is available. If not, a nice cold shower helps cool you down.

Also it may seem odd, but allowing yourself to sweat can keep you cooler, a brisk walk in the shade should feel good.

You can always find a nice tree in a park, around your house, or something, and lay out a blanket and read a book, play on a computer, or any other activity, just make sure it is in the shade.

Eating cold snacks also helps me out (Jello, Pop-sicles, Ice Cream). But make sure it is something low calorie, unless you don't care about that.

Found this post dated back to 2007 but it is still applicable. The key here is to block sun coming through your place by using foil.
http://www.futuregirl.com/craft_blog/2007/07/hot-hot-hot.aspx

What you need:
- Cheap white flat sheets (enough to cover the windows).
- Foil-like emergency blankets. These can be found in sporting good section.
- Strong neodymium magnets.

How to install:
- Cut or fold the sheet to it can cover your window. Then. attach it to the window frames with magnets. If you have non-metal window frames, attach some metal plates to the frames with removable adhesive.

- Layer the emergency blanket over the sheet and attach it with magnets.

This setup would not make your place looks great. However, it should reduce the heat.

If you are at home or in an environment that your appearance is not paramount...

Fill a small bucket or large bowl with water and ice. Dampen a towel or wash cloth and place it on the back of your neck. Change it out as it warms to keep yourself cool.

Drink plenty of water and stay away from caffeine and spicy foods.

To keep yourself cool, you just need to do a few things.
Keep your head cool. I will dunk my head under the tap a few times a day. If I'm in a dry climate, I'll spray on a little conditioner so my hair won't dry out.
Second, I put my undies in the freezer. (Marilyn Monroe did this in The Seven Year Itch and believe me... it works!)
So, when you keep those areas of the body cool, it makes all the difference in the world. Try it!

These are all ideas from friends who live in hot, Mediterranean climates.

One of the best things you can do is to wet a towel with the coldest water you have, and put it on the back of your neck. You'll see workers at summer sporting events doing this, because it works.

Another idea is to take a spritzer bottle, fill it water, add a few drops of pure peppermint or spearmint essential oil, and stick it in your fridge. Use it to spray your face and the back of your neck every 1/2 hour or so.

Grill out, or put your crockpot outside to cook in. Don't light your oven or your stove! If you do need to cook, do it early in the morning: plan ahead, and cook pasta, make your coffee etc. first thing. This avoids heating up your kitchen when it's the most hot out, so your house can cool down for the night so you can sleep.

Stay in the shade. Many people in Mediterranean countries will use either awnings to shade their windows, or the new sliding/recessing out door blinds.

Loose, light-colored clothing helps. Tight clothing, or dark clothing, retains heat from your body and the sun and makes you feel hotter.

Don't do anything during the hottest part of the day. There is a good reason for the siesta. And there is also a good reason for the passagiatta in the evening: that's when everyone comes out and socializes, when it's finally cool enough to do so.

I'm not sure why you'd not want a fan. One of the best things you can have is a whole-house fan mounted in the attic to pull heat out of the house from the top. In some areas they are so effective that they eliminate the need for air conditioners!

Tips:
* Fans are your friend!
*Turn off the TV, VCR, DVD player, Wii, PS3, Gamecube, Xbox, computer or whatever electronic device that you have that generates heat and doesn't need to be on
*Some people turn off their water heater if they know that they will not need hot water until later in the day.
*Hard to believe that a 60 watt light bulb is really adding heat to your home but it is, so Turn off Lights or Use Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs
*Open Some Windows, But Not Until It Cools Off
* Redecorate, or At Least Use Some Curtains (thats what I mean by Redecorate :) )
*Wait to Vacuum, vacuums put off heat
* Set Your Dishwasher to Air Dry If you wash your dishes in a dishwasher set it to air dry to save on both energy and so it does not put out heat to make the water evaporate off of the dishes.
* take a quick cold shower
*Drink cold water
