For me, I tend to get road rage only when I'm super stressed about something else going on in my life. For instance, I don't get road rage when I'm out shopping but suppose someone cut me off and I was trying to get to an interview, that would make me incredibly stressed and the stress makes it easier for me to feel road rage.

Lately I've been trying to relax as best as possible when I'm driving. Yes, there are times where you have to get somewhere at a certain time but once I know that I'll be late, I don't worry about it anymore - if you're late, you're late and there's nothing you can do about it now. The best thing is just to make sure you leave earlier next time.

Now, when people cut me off or do stupid things like stopping on a green, I just don't worry about it. I think back to some of the times when I had to do things like that (like cutting people off because I had to make a turn or stopping on a green because some other driver turned when it wasn't safe) and I realize that everybody has to do things like that at some point, everybody is stressed on the road and why contribute to that stress by raging on other drivers.

I try communication when dealing with all of my relationship issues (to include my relationships with other drivers). For road rage, I revert to my second language to do this... sign language.

Believe it or not, I calmed my road rage by buying a nicer car. This serves two purposes. The first is that it has 120hp more than the last one I drove, so I can blow by people rather effortlessly. The second reason it helps is because of all the features inside. When the smell of the leather is just right and everything else is well designed, I find I can just sit back and enjoy the car rather than stress about everything around me.

Since I usually drive with a baby in the car, I do not drive with road rage nor do I drive aggressively. But even when I'm alone, I don't drive that way either. It's dangerous. I wouldn't want to annoy someone with road rage because there have been more than one incident of people seeking revenge. I have a cousin that was killed in a parking lot because of parking space. Apparently, he pulled into a parking space that an older gentleman wanted. When my cousin got out of the car and was walking to the store, the man ran him over and killed him. His step-son was with him but not injured I believe. Killed over a parking space. Can you imagine? So there are all kinds of crazies out there with deadly weapons, their cars or an actual gun or knife. I don't take chances. With the recent snowfall, there was actually talk on the radio about what people do after they dig out their cars on the street. Many people save the spot with a chair or something. Now, to some like me, this seems like a strange thing and strange that anyone would consider a chair to hold "dibs" on a street parking spot. Again though, people have been hurt or killed when they took someone else's spot on the road. You just never know what will set people off.

Just let them go. I have on different occassions have had idiots speed past me and cut me off. Then you see them in an accident up the road and I just go by and smile at them.Or they are getting a ticket and thats really funny.

I do get frustrated, especially if someone is doing something stupid like trying to merge onto the freeway going 35. I have found that I can calm myself down by reminding myself that everyone, including me, has done stupid things on the road, and it's not the end of the world, and also that no one wants to be stuck there. If I can feel some camaraderie with fellow drivers by thinking about how we all want out of the traffic, and we all have places to be, that usually helps me relax. I also remind myself that "traffic was really horrible" is a pretty well-accepted excuse, and I've never been punished for getting stuck in traffic.

It's hard because there's so much anonymity on the road, but I know I wouldn't yell at someone if we were both walking down the street, so I don't yell at them in my car either.

I tell you what: being unemployed has its benefits, and not having to drive very much is one of them!

Last year I had a 68 mile commute -- one way. I was often frustrated, but mostly at the poor design of some of the merges on the freeways here in the Inland Empire of Southern California. A lane should never just end and force everyone to merge -- especially after a blind turn.

I coped with it by knowing the route well and making sure I was in the lane that didn't end so that I didn't need to merge. I confess that I did not allow drivers to merge if they zoomed up in the vacated lane and expected me to let them in. I just refused to. I think that behavior is very rude.

I'm happy to report that when I drove down to Fontana to the dentist last week I noticed that these improper merges on the 215 had all been fixed.
