How do you handle religious issues in the work place?

The boss allowed employees to vote whether or not to work an extra day a month on Saturday get get extra work done and get some over time, or make up hours. One employee of the 4 voted no (her religious day is on Saturday) The boss, valuing the employee and knowing that she always stays to get her work done during the week, kept the employee and allowed her to keep a five-day week. Now the employees who voted for the Saturday work are hating it and making nasty remarks about the other employee.

How do you handle this situation?

Your Company needs a Diversity/Inclusion Group to train staff and bosses. How to respect and be tolerant of, other workers religions, cultures, races, sexual orientations, and work styles.

That's a tricky one. It sounds like the other employees are resentful of the extra work. If it is an option for one person, it should truly be an option for all the employees to work or not work on Saturdays as they see fit, and if they need to make up for extra work, they should have the option of staying late as this employee does, in order to make up the time that way.

If they are just making nasty remarks about her in general because of her religion or what not, that's something that has to be nipped in the bud immediately. It could be classified as a hostile work environment and could put the company in a bad position in regards to a discrimination lawsuit in the future.

Staying late was always an option for all employees. The boss announced this week Saturday work would only be till June (the busy season) and 1 employee can opt out each Saturday, but they have to work it out who it will be.

It sounds like the other employees, having tried out the new system are hating it and using the other staff member as a scape goat to blame, for some crazy reason.

It actually has nothing to do with religion, the situation would be the same, if she had declined because of family commitments on Saturdays.

I think the best way to handle it would be to have a meeting and state that it is obvious that the new system is not working and it will be discontinued. It can also be mentioned that the unpleasant remarks which have been heard to be made are to cease immediately, or there will be consequences.

If the workload is such that it requires the extra hours, it might be better to recruit another staff member, it probably would cost no extra, than paying for all the overtime.
