How do you get a Mac to recognize that a new cloned external hard drive is identical to the copied one? (See details.)

When copying one Mac external hard drive to another (say, with Superduper), how do you get programs (say, Aperture 3 and its system of referenced masters) to recognize that the new drive is identical to the old one? (Simply changing the new drive's name to the old one doesn't work.)
Tip for best answer: M$2.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Have you tried booting from the external hard drive?

Not sure what you are trying to accomplish here. Any more info would be great.

According to macinstruct.com, "SuperDuper! will recognize the new drive, so you open SuperDuper!. Using the same settings as before (only in reverse), you can restore the backup you are currently using to the new drive. You will want to copy from your external hard drive to MacBook HD which will also now appear on your desktop. Once the transfer is complete, you're ready to go! Reboot your MacBook once again, holding the Option (or Alt) key to choose the internal hard drive. Click the arrow button to boot from it. You're done!"
