How do you find the circumference of a circle?

I am trying to figure out the circumference of a circle. How do I go about doing so? Thanks in advance!

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

The circumference of a circle is 2 times Pi times the radius, which is (2)(Pi)r. You can modify that formula and calculate the circumference by taking Pi times the diameter.

For example:

The circle has a radius of 5, find the circumference.
2 times 5 times Pi = 10 times Pi which is approximately 31.4 if you use 3.14 for Pi. Sometimes it is suggested to use 22/7 as an approximation for Pi. Given the radius of 5, you can find the diameter by doubling that, which is 10. Then multiply by Pi and you get the same answer.

You can also get the circumference if you know the area of the circle.
For example:

The area of a circle is 36Pi units squared, find the circumference. The formula for area of a circle is Pi times radius squared. So you take 36Pi = Pi(r squared). Divide the equation by Pi to get 36 = r squared. So r is 6. Now that you know the radius is 6, use the formula for circumference to get 2(6)Pi= 12Pi, which is approximately 37.68.

When it comes to different shapes, finding their dimensions can be very tricky. A circle is a very common shape. The circumference of a circle is the measure of the distance around the circle. A measure all the way across a circle that cuts through the middle point is the diameter of the circle. Half of the diameter is the radius. In other words the radius is from the middle point of the circle to any point on the circle. All three: diameter, circumference, and radius are measured in linear units. (So they are not squared or cubed). The actual formula for finding the circumference of a circle is Pi multiplied by the diameter. In other words simply multiple 3.14 by the distance across the circle through the center.
