Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker seeks to do more than reign in the Wisconsin budget on the backs of state and local government employees; he seeks to permanently strip unions of any power they have left to protect their members' benefits. While many conservative Republicans dislike unions because they may have some leverage over employers, they fail to take into account that unions are a vital part of American history -- the 40 hour work week came to be the norm thanks to their efforts, as well as employer-paid health care, vacation and other benefits.

There are a variety of other ways Governor Walker could have balanced the state budget, and stripping unions of their collective bargaining power should not have figured into the financial business of the state. Union protests were justified and generally peaceful. And in the aftermath of Walker's actions, taxpayers now understand that his actions are highly funded by a questionable wealthy financier named David Koch, and this collusion may violate a law that prohibits political coordination.

The unions have conceded on many issues, but they refuse to give-up collective barganing. Good for them. Union busting has always been, and always will be, huge on the republican, big business, itinerary. Walker is a total DB for making this an all or nothing issue. The working stiffs of America deserve better. Unions are not the enemy here. But, Walker is certainly trying to make them into one. Hurrah for the workers standing up to this political bully!
