With the shuttle program ending, we need to depend on Russia to send our astronauts to the International Space Station and Russia is raising the price, thoughts?

If we are out of the space race and the aerospace companies lose contracts and have to fire employees, what impact do you think it will have on the country coming out of the recession?

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Overall the plan includes a lot of tough choices, but makes sense. Shifting regular space operations to private companies over the coming years makes sense.

Constellation is already over-budget and missing deadlines and there isn't even a functional vehicle yet. At the same time, Space-X has made major progress at a much lower cost. Base on the current status of Falcon-9 and Dragon, Space-X will have vehicles capable of LEO and GTO within 5 years and manned vehicles in 10.

As far as lost jobs are concerned, I'm torn. On the one hand, I hate to see anybody lose their job, especially STEM-focused careers. On the other hand, this is a direct result of these companies' track record on NASA projects. There is also nothing prevent them from focusing more on commercial space flight. People still need to launch stuff into orbit, even if that stuff doesn't contain people.

Finally, while Niel Armstrong disagrees with the plan, many experts support it. I've inlcuded articles about 2 of these experts below.

Where I live a part of our economy is based on funding for NASA so any cuts in spending for aerospace hurts us. In down times things like aerospace are the first cuts with more money going to social programs under this adminstration.
