How do you feel about musical artists using "samples" of other songs?

This is a song by "Glass Candy". The main hook to the song was written by Issac Hayes and has been sampled many times, it has been sampled many times in different genres including The Geto Boys "Mind is Playing Tricks on Me." This song is a interesting case because its a sample of the Geto Boys song, which uses a sample taken from Issac Hayes. Obviously theres alot of differences between these songs and "hung up on my baby" but is it really that creative? or do you think there is value in samples because it brings great melodies and respect for classic artists to a younger generation that might not be familar with them? (IE, Notorious B.I.G. "Juicy", Afrika Bambatas "Planet Rock", ETC.) In my case i would have never heard this melody which is very familar to me now if it wasnt for the geto boys. How do you feel mahalo?

PS Whats your favorite use of this sample?

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I don't mind artists sampling another's work as long as credit is clearly given. That is the problem with sampling these days is that in most cases they don't tell you about it. The credit might only be in some fine print on a cd somewhere no one will read.

I can't tell you how many times I have heard a song and then years later I discover that they ripped it off from another artist. I think if they sample a song and it is a big part of the new song, they need to clearly state where they got the sample from.

I do like sampling for the fact that is introduces people to old songs which they might not have heard otherwise, but please give credit to the original artist.

One on hand, sampling may serve to introduce an audience to another artists' work, or at least familiarize the audience with that artist's talents. On the other hand, if the audience does not know that an artist is being sampled, there is no gain. I got into Frankie Smith's "Double Dutch Bus" after hearing Missy Elliot's "Gossip Folks".

Thanks for turning me on to "Hung Up n My Baby". I like how it's sampled in "Geto Boys"

I never knew that was a frankie smith sample, pretty cool. It seems like as the internet progresses and things like wikipedia and youtube get more comprehensive it will only be easier to find these things out. Already on youtube most music videos will usually have a comment (if you sift throught all the "dis sux" or the "dis rules" comments) of where the sample came from if you think a certain song has one, thats where i found out about the geto boys/issac hayes sample.
