How do you encourage someone to get counseling if they are afraid to do it?

If someone close to you is obviously very troubled, to the point where they make decisions that could jeopardize some of the most important things in their life, how do you get them to seek psychological help? Is there a way to do it without making them feel angry and insulted? Could a note be preferable to a conversation to avoid an argument?

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Quite honestly if someone is not ready to ask for help, then no matter how much you persist or how often the visit a therapist, it will all have been for nothing. In order for any style of therapy to work, the client must be able to be honest and want to have the help. If they are not open with the counselor the time spent talking is just a waste. Continue to show support and provide information where you can, but it is their decision in the end. Once they have determined that they need help, then they will be able to seek help and be successful.

Go with them the fiirst time and walk them through it. If they won't do it than see if you can invite the shrink to your house on a social level and the person and get them talking. Make an excuse to leave the room and let the guy talk your friend into it.
